Kuta Beach

This beach is probably the most famous beach in Bali. Kuta is a beautiful crescent-shaped beach, which is only about a ten-minute drive from the Denpasar airport. Kuta beach is very famous for it’s surfing and the lack of coral reefs in the area, it is the perfect beach for beginners and experienced surfers alike. Many people say to Kuta Beach is the best in the world. many 3 and 4-star restaurants are close to the beach, it is also a shopping mecca and a lively nightlife. On the beach, the atmosphere very cosy and topless bathing and similar are usually not a big problem.

Uluwatu Beach

Although there are no “public nude beaches” in Bali, as is the beautifully situated beach Uluwatu a good bet, as it is tucked away behind a large rock. A sunset at Uluwatu Beach is one of the most beautiful sights in the world, and there are many local cafes in the area. Uluwatu is a very lovely white sand beach.

Most of the other beaches

Geger Beach, Dreamland Beach, etc. was a secret nudist beach for some time. Geger is better known because it is five minutes from the largest golf resorts, called Nusa Dua. Recently, Dreamland Beach a makeover and is now called “New Kuta Beach” in an attempt to get more tourism revenue.

Clothing Optional retreats

Bali has two popular clothing optional villas. In South Bali the Villa Bali Gattes is minutes away from Canggu and Echo beaches. The other villa Laki Uma Villa has optional nudity on the premises. However, most of the guests choose to go nude. Facilities include a steam room, Jacuzzi tubs and a library.

Nudity on beaches is actually not legal on Bali!!!
Quote from USA Today: “In 2008 Indonesia’s Parliament in Jakarta passed an anti-pornography law that can land you up to four years in jail if caught processing or downloading pornography and a sentence of up to 12 years in jail for any sexually suggestive display or performance. Exposing body parts in an exotic way would be punishable by as much as 10 years in jail. Depending on how your nudity was perceived by the authorities under these laws, there could be severe legal consequences for public nudity in Bali.”.

If you risk public nudity on the beach, then do it on less populated beaches in the less populated end. The mentioned beaches is good beaches, but no garanties for the consequences.

Is it worth the risk?

I personally wouldn’t take the risk on the beach but on a clothing optional resort/villa, I would.

Is it worth the risk? Write a comment with your opinion.

I lived in Indonesia, in West Java. I would get nude at a bathing temple and then walk around in the jungle. The only people around were farmers, they didn’t have an issue with nudity.
BUT – being nude in areas with lots of people isn’t advisable.

  2. islam_sucks

if the country is islamic, you probably shouldn’t get naked on their beaches.
A friend (let’s just call him poor idiot) is facing 12yrs there just for carrying two joints. I say avoid the country at all costs. If a cop frames you for 2 joints and you don’t have the $ to bribe him, you’re fucked!

    1. Friendly Tourist

Dude if you can’t follow the rules of a country then don’t go there for tourism. It is a shame that you think it is because of religion.

Try to take joints into China and see how many years you get

  3. John Hardy

Thing is islam-sucks, the people of Bali are not muslim.

  4. Mixedcouple

Thank you for writing this blog. I do not think we could go completely naked in Kuta, too many people there.

We are a naturist couple, live in jakarta and would go around to find nude places as well. There is one resort in north of bali that is also clothing optional. the place is beautiful, by the beach, very quiet and serene. We went there last April and will go again soon.

Keep writing on this nudity stuff.. we love it.

These are part of the 2008 law that was on its way to being passed.

Kissing in public – 1 year to 5 years in jail

Nudity – 2 months to 12 months in jail (So the Balinese who currently have nowhere to bath except in the river are to go smelly, and tourists best be careful with those hotel curtains!). Interpretation even extends to forbidding tight fitting clothes

Erotic dancing – 18 months to 7 years in jail (So the Balinese ‘Jogged’ dance is history and so is modern western style dancing; bang goes the club scene!). Even making provocative movements such as girls bending over are to be outlawed.

Being in possession of a sexual aid such as a vibrator or ribbed condom – 3 years to 15 years in jail

Being in possession of a ‘porno’ film which we understand also means video footage in your camera of your wife in a bikini on the beach in Thailand – 8 months to 7 years in jail.

Having sex with someone of the same gender, or with a dead person or with an animal – 18m to 7 years in jail

My only advice is “don’t do the crime if you cant do the time”.

After spending many months travelling both thailand and Indonesia I assure you topless at some of the more hidden beaches eg: Uluwatu (dreamland beach and Padang Padang as well as Uluwatu beach) topless is common. These are the few places in bali it seemed acceptable. But their laws are strict and police there focus on different things daily. So today what is doable may be the focus of fines and bribes the next day. My advice is be careful and tan lines can be sexy so no need to get all ya kit off. Play by their rules and you will rarely have an trouble.

  15. Nick

Bali has two truly nudist places, “Bali au Naturel” (all genders) and “Laki Uma Villa” (men only, not exclusively but mostly gay). In those two places, any kind of textile is not an option, nudity is compulsory for all guests (management and owners go naked 24/7).
